The 1401 self-test, tests all aspects of the internal 1401 hardware. Many error codes in self-test indicate equipment problems.
If you have encountered a Report Error similar to this:-

You have encountered a combination Error 71/73/75
There is a logical order of likely causes for this error. It is only likely to appear on a Standard 1401 or 1401plus. Try to fix the error using a series of logically sequenced instructions. We recommend that you try each one in order.
If the percentage error, shown in the first line of the above sample error report, is significantly greater than 50% then the problem could lie with a failed DAC
