How to choose between a micro1401 and a 1401plus

The power and speed of the two products is broadly comparable. Both run all of our standard software. The numbers of inputs and outputs of the basic micro1401 are restricted compared with the 1401plus, but they are what most users actually use.

The differences between them are mainly in the options, which are richer for the 1401plus, as a more mature product. Both instruments can be expanded, the micro to accept 16 and the plus to accept 32 waveform inputs. On the micro, the extra inputs are all via front panel BNC sockets, while for the 1401plus, inputs after the first 8 are on Cannon connectors.

The micro1401 is limited to 2 waveform outputs, instead of the 4 on the plus; however the micro has 32 digital inputs and outputs, against 24 on the plus. All the signal connectors on the micro have activity LEDs.

Some specialist options are currently only available on the plus: the 8 channel programmable discriminator, the 16 bit waveform input/output system, and the integral multi-channel amplifier/filters. The "Spike2 panel" with BNC digital input and output is only available on the micro.

The micro1401 is physically much smaller, and somewhat less expensive than the plus.
